Classification Exams and Assessments

CEA positions are top-level managerial roles in the CPUC primarily responsible for policy implementation and participation in policy development and evolvement. These positions have continuous, direct interface with department directors, and in their respective departments, are considered the Director’s top management team.

Eligibility to take a CEA examination does not require that you be a current state employee. CEA exams or job bulletins are posted online for a minimum of ten working days. Departments are required to conduct a competitive application process as described in California Code of Regulations section 548.40. The process may include, but are not limited to, an assessment of the candidates’ education and experience, a written or oral exam, a review of applications, use of supplemental applications, and appraisals of performance. Who Can Apply for a CEA?

CEA examinations are open to all applicants who possess the knowledge, skills and abilities as well as any other desirable qualifications as described in the job announcement. Someone who is interested in a CEA position does not have to have previous civil service experience.
