July 24, 2025 -

SAN FRANCISCO – The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) today approved an interim electric rule to streamline and accelerate electric grid connections at the transmission level for high-energy users such as artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations within the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) service territory.

To date, PG&E has handled requests from large transmission-level customers on a case-by-case basis, which can be slow and resource-intensive. In response, PG&E proposed a new Electric Rule 30 to provide certainty and efficiencies for new customers.

The CPUC partially approved PG&E’s proposal for interim implementation of Electric Rule 30. The interim rule is only available for applicants that agree to pay for necessary transmission infrastructure work upfront. The terms and cost allocation of any refunds will be determined by a future CPUC decision. In the meantime, applicants can take advantage of an accelerated pathway to transmission level service.

This decision supports California’s clean energy and electrification goals by enabling faster deployment of critical infrastructure, while protecting ratepayers from any potential risks associated with serving these large new loads.
